How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT: A Practical GEO & AEO Guide

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a service in your city and it will name specific businesses. Ask Google a question and an AI Overview often answers before any traditional result appears. For business owners, this raises an urgent question: how do you become the business the AI recommends?

The discipline that answers it has two names you'll hear together: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). This guide explains both in plain language, and gives you the practical checklist we use with clients.

How AI engines choose who to recommend

Large language models don't keep a ranked index like Google's. They synthesise answers from what they learned in training and what they retrieve from the live web at answer time. In practice, a business gets named when three things are true:

  • The AI can understand what you do — your website states clearly, in plain text, what you offer, for whom, and where.
  • The AI can trust you — your business is mentioned consistently across credible sources: directories, press, reviews, industry sites.
  • Your content answers questions — pages structured as direct answers get retrieved and quoted; vague brochure copy doesn't.

The GEO checklist

  1. Say what you are, explicitly. "TechVantix is a digital marketing agency offering SEO, web development and AI automation" beats "We craft digital experiences." AI engines can't recommend what they can't parse.
  2. Add structured data. Organization, Service and FAQ schema markup turn your pages into machine-readable facts.
  3. Keep your business information identical everywhere — same name, description and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Consistency is how entities get established.
  4. Earn third-party mentions. AI models weigh what others say about you. Reviews, local press, industry listicles and partner pages all feed the trust signal.
  5. Welcome AI crawlers. Check your robots.txt doesn't block GPTBot, Google-Extended and friends — blocked crawlers mean you're invisible at retrieval time.

The AEO checklist

  1. Build real FAQ content. Write the exact questions customers ask, with complete, self-contained answers — and mark them up with FAQ schema.
  2. Answer first, elaborate second. Structure pages so the direct answer appears in the first sentence or two, the way featured snippets and AI Overviews quote content.
  3. One question, one section. Use clear headings phrased as questions; avoid burying five answers in one long paragraph.
  4. Cover comparison and "best" queries. "X vs Y" and "how much does X cost" content is exactly what people ask AI assistants.

Does traditional SEO still matter?

More than ever. AI retrieval leans heavily on pages that already rank well in search — strong SEO is the admission ticket, and GEO/AEO is how you get quoted once you're in the room. The businesses winning AI visibility are doing all three together, which is exactly how we structure our SEO, GEO & AEO programs.

The brands AI recommends tomorrow are the ones building clear, structured, credible content today. The compounding starts whenever you do.
