What GEO actually is
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your brand visible inside AI-generated answers. Where SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links, GEO optimizes for being named and cited in a synthesised response.
The mechanics are different. A language model doesn't keep a ranked index — it draws on what it learned during training plus what it retrieves live at answer time. So getting recommended depends on three things being true at once:
- The engine can understand you. Your site states plainly what you offer, to whom, and where. Vague brand poetry is invisible to a machine.
- The engine can verify you. Your business details are consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social platforms — that consistency is how an entity gets established.
- The engine can quote you. Your content contains specific, self-contained, factual passages worth citing.
Why this matters now
Every query answered by an AI assistant is a query that may never reach your website through a traditional search result. Brands that establish themselves in these systems early gain a compounding advantage — models and their retrieval sources reinforce what already appears authoritative. Late movers are competing against incumbency.
GEO, AEO and SEO together
GEO doesn't replace search fundamentals. AI retrieval leans heavily on pages that already rank, so strong SEO is the entry ticket. AEO then structures your content as direct answers, and GEO builds the entity and trust signals that get you named. We run all three as one program — see the combined overview.
